i have never been good about intentionally consuming carb laden meals before an event. never. the night before 2006 broad street run, jesse and i went out to eat in philly with my family. i ordered a salad. a small salad. the year after that, was the fiber one fiasco. as if i hadn't learned my lesson, in years to come, i would consume a dinner consisting entirely of broccoli, and the following year was sushi the night before a ten mile sprint. i've been a distance runner for almost 9 years now, and have never followed what is considered to be proper protocol in the 48 hours leading up to the race- to me is the most ridiculous prospect- because all that truly entails plopping your ass in one spot, staying off your feet, and eating a lot of smart but delicious food. Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas day, i can do this no problem- are you kidding me? the day before BSR i am running haywire around center city, and eating sushi- draining my energy stores and actually creating a calorie defecit! fail.
tomorrow is my last long run before the marathon. i can leave nothing to chance. yesterday, all I ate all day were two bowls of fiber one and coffee. i also ran 5 mi, did 1/2 hour of pilates, and one hour of yoga. if i do not eat food today, no way in hell will my body hold out for 18 miles tomorrow. for those of you unfamiliar with 18 miles, that is running from breton point on the drive out to common fence point in portsmouth- turning around, and then running back to NEB. it's especially harder if you've been eating like crap the way i have.
i've been very lazy about my calorie intake lately. if i can't decide what it is i want to eat, i will have nothing and fall asleep. i don't do a lot of food shopping, cooking, or baking. not like i used to. normally i will keep some skim milk and fiber one in the house and have a bowl of cereal with some raisins or raw almonds when i know i should be eating something. occasionally i will heat up some quinoa for protein, fiber, and carbs the day before a long run in a very deliberate attempt to build an energy store. sadly, once my stomach passed the point where it's very hungry, it kind of goes into this limbo stage where i'm just unappetized, and too indifferent to make a decision about what to have. at which point, i'll have a nap instead and the terrible cycle will begin anew. this is irresponsible, and i am awaiting a lecture from my father about the importance of eating and marathon training.
today however is a horse of another color. i'm running later with my girlfriend, but tomorrow truly is the make or break day. for breakfast, i ate a burrito with the wheat wrap (usually i order "pants-less" burritos) and for lunch, i ate another burrito with a spinach wrap. which just about covers me for everything I didn't eat yesterday... and hopefully my little jog this evening. i'll have to get serious after i run tonight if i want tomorrow to go smoothly. but if i know me, i'll have a bowl of fiber one, suck down a nappy-time pill and hope for the best haha... ::sigh::...
